The Federation of Hellenic Medical Societies of North America Presented Lecture 52 of the Timeless Wisdom Series: Hippocrates and the Ethical Foundations of Medicine

Professor Ioannis Chrysoulakis, President of the Open University Advisory Committee and Vice-Chairman of the AHEPA Hellenic Affairs Committee, reflected on his roots in Kos—the birthplace of Hippocrates—and on how the Hippocratic ideal has influenced his life and work.

 He also announced the upcoming Aristotle Innovation Forum, May 17-22, 2026, in Thessaloniki, featuring the theme “Hippocrates Meets Aristotle.”

Dr. Spyros Mezitis, MD, PhD, President of the Federation of Hellenic Medical Societies of North America and endocrinologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, presented the Federation’s initiatives linking Diaspora physicians with Greece.
He highlighted its collaboration with the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos, which each year hosts a ceremony where top graduates from Greek and international medical schools recite the Hippocratic Oath in its original ancient Greek form before the statue of Hippocrates—renewing the bond between classical ethics and modern medicine.
Dr. Mezitis also outlined educational programs such as Birthright Hellas, jointly organized with HCC-SW, offering young people of Greek descent the opportunity to study and experience Greece’s cultural heritage for free.

Dr. Anthony M. Vintzileos, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, delivered the keynote address, presenting his linguistic and historical research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
His findings revealed that the phrase “οὐδὲ γυναικὶ πεσσὸν φθόριον δώσω”—traditionally misinterpreted as a prohibition of abortion—actually refers to avoiding harmful pessaries once used for contraception.
Dr. Vintzileos emphasized that accurate translation must precede ethical interpretation, concluding that “the Oath was not interpreted—it was altered.”

Ως απόγονος της Κω, γενέτειρας του Ιπποκράτη, μίλησε για την επιρροή των Ιπποκρατικών αξιών στο προσωπικό και επαγγελματικό του έργο και ανακοίνωσε το επερχόμενο Φόρουμ Καινοτομίας Αριστοτέλης 17 - 22 Μαιου 2026 στη Θεσσαλονίκη με θέμα «Όταν ο Ιπποκράτης συναντά τον Αριστοτέλη».

Δρ. Σπύρος Μεζίτης, Πρόεδρος της Ομοσπονδίας Ελληνικών Ιατρικών Εταιρειών Βορείου Αμερικής και ενδοκρινολόγος στα New York-Presbyterian Hospital και Lenox Hill Hospital της Νέας Υόρκης, παρουσίασε τις πρωτοβουλίες της Ομοσπονδίας για τη σύνδεση των ιατρών της Διασποράς με την Ελλάδα.
Αναφέρθηκε στη συνεργασία με το Διεθνές Ίδρυμα Ιπποκράτη της Κω, το οποίο κάθε χρόνο συγκεντρώνει τους αριστούχους αποφοίτους ελληνικών και διεθνών ιατρικών σχολών για να δώσουν τον Ιπποκρατικό Όρκο στην αρχαία ελληνική γλώσσα μπροστά στο άγαλμα του Ιπποκράτη.
Παράλληλα, παρουσίασε το πρόγραμμα «Birthright Hellas» που διοργανώνεται από κοινού με το HCC-SW και προσφέρει σε νέους ομογενείς ελληνικής καταγωγής ελεύθερες εκπαιδευτικές εμπειρίες στην Ελλάδα.

Καθηγητής Anthony M. Vintzileos, Καθηγητής Μαιευτικής και Γυναικολογίας στην Ιατρική Σχολή Zucker του Πανεπιστημίου Hofstra/Northwell, παρουσίασε την κύρια ομιλία του με βάση τη δημοσιευμένη του έρευνα στο American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Ο καθηγητής αποκάλυψε ότι οι πρώτες λατινικές μεταφράσεις του Ιπποκρατικού Όρκου αλλοίωσαν τη φράση «οὐδὲ γυναικὶ πεσσὸν φθόριον δώσω», εισάγοντας τις λέξεις «έμβρυο» και «άμβλωση» που δεν υπάρχουν στο πρωτότυπο ελληνικό κείμενο.
Τόνισε ότι η ορθή μετάφραση προηγείται της ορθής ερμηνείας, υπογραμμίζοντας πως «ο Όρκος δεν ερμηνεύτηκε — αλλοιώθηκε».
