The Sacrifice and Contribution of Greek Women in WWII
Mothers, sisters, nurses, villagers in the mountains of the Greek mainland who volunteered to assist the Greek Army defending the mainland against the Italian attack, women who aided the Red Cross efforts to care for the wounded and handicapped soldiers in military hospitals. Women who never expected to have the courage to fight the triple fascist occupation of Greece in the cities, the villages behind enemy lines or to join the resistance in the mountains. We will honor their contributions and courage with a series of short vignettes highlighting their remarkable actions in WWII.
Δεν της διαφεύγει η πραγματικότητα, δεν έχει αυτή φαντασία για να χάνεται σε όνειρα. Άδειες είναι οι αποθήκες της. Ο άντρας που φεύγει δεν έχει να της αφήσει κομπόδεμα και αυτή το ξέρει. Σκληραγωγημένη στις δοκιμασίες προπέμπει τον άντρα της και πνίγει τις ανησυχίες της για να εγκαρδιώσει τον πολεμιστή. Πόσες τέτοιες αφανείς ηρωίδες σε κάθε σπιτάκι σε κάθε συνοικισμό Ποιος της ενέπνευσε αυτήν την ευψυχία; Που είχαν κρυμμένο τόσο απόθεμα πατριωτισμού; Ούτε ιστορία ξέρουν ούτε τις Θερμοπύλες υποπτεύονται. Υπάρχει ο ηρωισμός του μετώπου υπάρχει όμως και ο ηρωισμός των μετόπισθεν. Ευλαβούμενοι τον πρώτον να μην υποτιμούμε τον δεύτερο. ( Παυλος Παλαιολόγος 8 Νοεμβρίου 1940 εφημερίδα βήμα) .
